Despite being the story of ten men who really did explore and map the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869, playwright Jaclyn Backhaus insists that no male-identifying actors perform in Men on Boats. Achieving the right look for this play involved researching the actual individuals (of whom there are a few historic photographs), adventurers of the 19th Century, and Civil War veterans, as well as extreme and specific distressing of costume pieces and very careful fitting of clothes (especially for the performer who plays John Wesley Powell, who had only one arm at the time of their journey).
