Because of the structure of this play-- taking place from 1899 t0 1937 with the leads rarely leaving the stage-- the director wanted the costumes to create the sense of time changing, anchoring each scene in its appropriate year. We used onstage costume changes as a device to show the passage of time and to facilitate the intimacy of the two main characters over the course of their relationship.
